  7. Why did the ancient Greeks hold the geocentric view of the universe? Click on 2 answers.

  A. The Sun appeared to them to revolve around Earth.

  B. They had not developed methods of gathering accurate data on the movement

  C. Their religious and philosophical beliefs supported this view.

  D. Some of the planets in the solar system had not been discovered yet.

老师首先说了,“Observations of the sky make it appear”和选项A对应。接下来一句话就是“And this view is also supported by their philosophical and religious beliefs about the origin and structure of the universe.”and 和also都是两个很强烈的并列信号词,所以我们可以提取出第二个原因philosophical and religious beliefs,对应选项C。

So, why did the ancient Greeks believe that the Earth was the center of the universe?

Well, it made sense to them. Observations of the sky make it appear as if the Sun, the moon, and the stars all revolve around the Earth everyday, while the Earth itself stayed in one place.

And this view is also supported by their philosophical and religious beliefs about the origin and structure of the universe. It was presented in the works of well-known Greek philosopher as early as the fourth century B.C.E., and the geocentric theory continue to prevail in Western Europe for almost 2,000 years, until the 17th century.

  2. According to the professor, what are two weaknesses of the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire? Click on 2 answers.

  A. It relies on subjective reporting.

B.It assesses a limited number of situations.

C.It does not assess visual distractions

D.It does not account for factors other than distractibility.

  Professor

For decades, psychologists have been looking at our ability to perform tasks while other things are going on, how we are able to keep from being distracted and what the conditions for good concentration are. As long ago as 1982, researchers came up with something called the CFQ-the Cognitive Failures Questionnaire. This questionnaire asks people to rate themselves according to how often they get distracted in different situations, like forgetting to save a computer file because they had something else on their mind or missing a speed limit sign on the road. John?

  John

I've lost my share of computer files, but not because I’m easily distracted. I just forget to save them.

  Professor

And that's part of the problem with the CFQ. It doesn’t take other factors into account enough, like forgetfulness. Plus you really can’t say you are getting objective scientific results from a subjective questionnaire where people report on themselves.

It doesn’t take other factors into account enough, like forgetfulness.

  1.X other factor;对应答案D.

文中that's part of the problem暗示这只是几个问题之一,之后会有并列成分出来,所以后面又跟了一例“Plus you really can’t say you are getting objective scientific results from a subjective questionnaire where people report on themselves.”这个信号词是Plus,相当于also,in addition, second 这样的意思。

  2. X object,对应答案A

  TPO15-L1-Q2

What are two points the professor makes about parchment?

  A. It is more long lasting than paper.

  B. It was inexpensive to produce during the Middle Ages.

  C. It was the material Archimedes used for his writings.

  D. Its use for books decreased after the 1400s.

During the 1400s, when printing was being developed, paper became the predominant material for books in Europe, but prior to that, it was parchment. Parchment is durable-much more so than paper。

Parchment is durable-much more so than paper,所以A选项容易漏选。

通过排除法,我们首先可以排除的是B,因为后面文中一直在强调羊皮纸很贵,“it could be reused, which came in handy since it was a costly material and in short supply.”

Archimedes' writings were originally done on papyrus scrolls.
